Deep in the Black Forest, in Nordrach, a narrow path winds its way up the mountain, sometimes making you wonder if you've lost your way. But just when you doubt it, the forest opens up and reveals the reason for the trip here: the pure luxury of silence, far away from the hustle and bustle and stress. In our garden we have fulfilled a dream that we now want to share with our guests. But more on that later. Let's start at the beginning. During a vacation trip in the Black Forest, Thomas, a professional globetrotter, and Andrew, a passionate hobby gardener, discovered the property on which The Moosbach Garden would later be built. It was love at first sight. After the purchase, we had to be patient, because it was necessary to analyze the garden and the soil conditions in detail. In the first year, we observed the seasons, the climate and the course of the sun.
Then we could finally begin. Step by step, different garden areas were created, such as the Cottage Garden, which was strongly inspired by the ideas of the renowned English garden designer Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932). It is no coincidence that English gardens in particular influenced our garden in the Black Forest. Andrew comes from the county of Yorkshire in the north of England and Thomas also lived in Great Britain for twelve years, where he worked in various management positions in hotels. But it was only thanks to Andrew that Thomas became a passionate hobby gardener and plant lover. Our knowledge and enthusiasm grew as we visited many gardens.
A garden is never completed; a garden is never finished.
There is no doubt that a garden is never finished. Our plan is therefore to create a new area of the garden every year. The existing kitchen garden is to be transformed into a herb and cut flower garden. A bed for drought-resistant plants was already planted this spring. A water garden that offers animals and plants additional habitat is also on our list. In addition, the natural wildflower meadow of the Black Forest is constantly evolving, as is the arboretum. We certainly have no shortage of ideas.
division of labor
Gardening together sometimes leads to tension between partners, if one prefers wild growth and the other order. With us it is different. We do most of the work together, especially the planning. Andrew usually chooses the plants, while Thomas can take his time with the construction work. The unofficial boss, however, is Bramble, our black farm cat. Luna and Cooper, our border collies, excel in their role as personal guest attendants, welcoming every visitor warmly and providing entertainment.
English Rose Dreams
Andrew and Thomas were immediately impressed by David Austin's rose varieties. "The beauty, the scent and especially the quality were convincing. At first we bought the roses directly from England just for ourselves. Sometimes we couldn't plant them straight away due to time constraints, so they remained in the plant containers on the terrace for a while. This caught the attention of visitors and they wanted to buy them. This is how our rose shop was born, which initially only sold English roses, but now offers a wider range.
Over 700 different types of roses are currently blooming and fragrant in the garden, and a few dozen more are added every year. Today, however, it is no longer just English roses.
